After months of growing increasingly excited over The Expendables 2, this news is just heartbreaking. Details are very scarce, but according to EW, one stuntman was killed and another seriously injured during an explosion on the set of the action sequel. The film's second unit stunt team were filming on Lake Ognyanovo in Bulgaria when the incident happened. It's not known yet if the explosion was an effect for the film or an accident explosion. The film's main unit was shooting at a location over two hours when it happened.
The names of the stuntmen have not yet been released for obvious reasons, but Nu Image/Millennium Films did issue a statement regarding the incident:
“It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident.”
Stuntmen are the unsung heroes of action films. While we may root for Sly or Statham or Arnold, it's the stuntmen and their work that help to elevate the genre. We here at Movie-Vault extend our deepest sympathies to all those effected by this incident and wish for a quick and speedy recovery to the injured stuntman.
