What's next for Quentin Tarantino?

Posted by: Bill McCormick on May 17, 2004

2003 and 2004 were both big for Quentin Tarantino. With a 5 year break between 1997's Jackie Brown and 2003's Kill Bill Vol. 1 it was the least we could expect. After the release of Pulp Fiction in 1994, Quentin Tarantino became a household name. Few directors with only two directing credits could be worthy of such praise, but as the scale increases, Tarantino is living up to the legend. So what could he do next? Possibly take on a smaller picture and break from the epic hysteria that was Kill Bill? Or why not increase the scale and take on James Bond? If he gets his way that's exactly what will happen.

Tarantino himself has expressed interest in directing an upcoming James Bond flick. Although this may upset some fans, considering it would either delay or indefinetly postpone the much anticipated Vega Brothers film and his upcoming war flick Inglorious Bastards (which are both set to star Michael Madsen). It could also offer a new breathe of life to the dying franchise which (for the last four titles) has starred Pierce Brosnan.

When asked about the rumors, Tarantino told Reuters "I would like to do the original book 'Casino Royale' and do it more or less the way the Ian Fleming book is. I don't know if they're going to go for it or not, but I'm letting them know I'm interested.". The original film version of Casino Royale was a parody starring David Niven as an aging James Bond, called out of retirement after the death of "M".

It is currently unknown whether Tarantino is aiming for the 21st Bond film, which is currently in the script writing process with Neal Purvis (Die Another Day, The World is Not Enough) set to write, or further down the line. "I've always wanted to do it. I bumped into Pierce Brosnan and we talked about it. He liked the idea" Tarentino said. Brosnan has recently claimed that the next Bond film would be his last, so one might assume that if all goes well and Tarantino manages to get hired on for the 22nd picture, Brosnan might return.

As far as a Vega Brothers film is concerned, both Madsen and Tarantino have expressed interest in the project. The biggest issue would be the fact that both characters were killed off, so the film would obviously have to be a prequel. "Well, I know Quentin wants to make it and I know he went through a period of time where he wasn't going to make it, because let's face it. John doesn't look the same as he did in Pulp Fiction. I sure as hell don't look the same as Mr. Blonde. So he was having a hard time with the concept of making a prequel." said Madsen in an interview with About.com.

"But he ran off to Mexico for a couple days and I don't know what he did when he was there, but when he got back, he called me. And he goes, "Michael, I changed my mind about The Vega Brothers, I think I figured out how to do it." Tarantino himself has been somewhat contradicting in regards to a definite answer about the film. Some sources have him claiming it to be his next picture and others quote him saying it may not got made at all. In the end, with an idea for an animated Kill Bill as well as a possible sequel in ten years time and the above mentioned Inglorious Bastards Tarantino may have his hands full for the next decade.
