The remake's ending had something to do with the Ghosts of a ship that was set on fire 100 years ago, wanting revenge on the ancestors of the forefathers who made a deal with the Captain to do this and get the gold. I can't remember but the deal went wrong and the innocent parished. But basically that's why they were killing them at the end. For revenge.
This is also somewhat similar to the ending of the original 'The Fog'.

I understood why the ghosts were killing everyone, but what I didn't get was why the main character's girlfriend turned into a ghost and left with their captain. Nothing in the movie explained why she did that, so I was very confused.

I haven't seen Part 9 so I've no clue if I'll like it or not.

Yeah it seems like when we're growing up we like things that we realize are pretty crappy when we're older. The only one I own is part 4, which was halfway ok I suppose. Part 9 was pretty terrible, so don't feel compelled to watch it. It isn't worth seeing.
