Hey Dewd, please comply to the (more boring, I know) usual English spelling for public contests.
Unless you want us to Randonly Piss in your column about the frustration involved in trying to work out how your mind did not work in this area.
The Enema Lady
If I may interject a comment, the backend coding has been made to cover some of these possibly 'annoyances'.
# Make a clone of the guess and clean it up
$guess_clean = lc($guess);
$guess_clean =~ s/^the|[\-\)\|\;\:\`\"'\.]|\s//g;
# Now use this 'cleaned up' copy to test
# against to give user a fair chance
That is currently the section which consumes input from the user and attempts to filter some characters which individuals ignore or avoid.
This then means 'The' word is removed from the start of a guess, and these characters from any part of the guess: -, ), |, ;, :, `, ., and multiple spaces.
To clarify, I'd like to use an existing answered entry as an example:
The is no life in the void...only death.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The following input patterns would have resulted in a valid answer:
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of Rings Fellowship of Ring
These, amoung others, could have been in uppercase or mixed, but still valid.
I hope this has given you enough confidence to start playing again.
