This is a movie carried entirely by the visuals but even more than that, the soundtrack. Though it will likely result in me being flamed I'll say it anyways, screw Inception (in terms of soundtrack). I loved the Inception soundtrack and I still do but the soundtrack for Tron Legacy just blew me away.
I've always been a fan of Daft Punk but when I pictured them doing the soundtrack I didn't think it would be such a flawless mix of electronica and classical. These guys know their music and their cameo was well deserved. The movie is drastically brought down by its lackluster and predictable plot but even more so by the fact thats its terrified of its own shadow. It introduces to us this living breathing city, something that the original never really touched on with more of a focus on the bleak landscape and mountain ranges. It's something that feels exciting when first introduced in the disc wars but then is quickly removed from the movie save for the club scene. I believe it's one of the main drawbacks to the sequel. Speaking of the club scene what a disappointment that Michael Sheen was barely used. He's such a brilliant actor and played a very flamboyant and Bowie-esque type role but was on the screen for barely 5 minutes. I agree that Jeff Bridges (plural) were underused, especially considering he played two characters in the film. Garret Hedlund is passable as Sam Flynn but shows no talent convincing you of anything that wasn't made plainly obvious in the movie already. Thank God they didn't give him too many demanding lines and the ones he did have you were distracted by the pretty lights and the score. Now I'm not one to recommend a movie based solely on how it looks or sounds as it just seems kind of shallow but this is definitely a great movie to watch in theatres, especially Imax. I think it's my love of music and respect for the original as being far ahead of its time that makes me enjoy this sequel so much. It was great to see the revamp of disc wars and the light cycles but for what was added to the film otherwise, a lot of it felt like a work in progress or a tech demo than an actual movie. This is for the hardcore fans of the original and those who can enjoy a movie or its entertainment value and wow factor and in turn ignore a number of flaws (none fatal in my opinion). I realize that it's a world filled with programs but the programs themselves still show fear, sorrow, excitement, etc. so I refer the city itself as living and breathing. They show a huge arena with thousands of programs but the small amount of time you spend in the city itself you see a few people walking around and a handful inside of a club and that's the extent of your interaction outside of the main characers.
Though they don't all seem to have the same range of emotions and seem a little more robotic (seeing as they're just code) they still are human enough to double cross eachother and have an instinct for self preservation. |
