I saw this recently and enjoyed it very much.
Quote:
Atonement was the first and only film I'd seen with Keira Knightley and when I looked her up on IMDb, I noticed she'd been in several period pieces, the most recent being The Duchess, so when I saw it at the library, I grabbed it just for the hell of it.
I always end up comparing each and every period piece I see to Barry Lyndon since it's the best such film and every film falls incredibly short, and while The Duchess doesn't come anywhere near it, it's still closer than most of the period pieces that have come out in recent years. The comparison is also more fitting than it usually is because Knightley plays a character very similar to Lady Lyndon, only this film is about her and from her perspective, and it helps a great deal that she performs very well.
Ralph Fiennes also did a hell of a job. Outside of Schindler's List, I've never been impressed with him but I was here.
It's a very emotional film and I was completely enthralled from the very first scene. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and I highly recommend it.
