Shutter Island (2010)

I saw this and I knew what to expect going in to the film as I had already read about half of the book but never got the chance to finish it. But I was surprised at how faithful the film was to the original material. The directing was also masterfully done and pretty cool I saw some cool camera tricks I hadn't seen since Martin Scorsese directed Bringing Out The Dead, Martin Scorsese did one great job and everyone was top notch especially Ben Kingsley and DiCaprio and I never though I would jump out of fright especially in a Scorsese film but I did. All in all a solid thriller with a good story and some great performances and for me it's the best film I've seen in 2010 so far.

Better than inception?!!! No possible way. Leonardo Dicaprio was indeed in the best movie of 2010, but it was Inception, not Shutter Island. Shutter Island does make my top 10 of the year though. Great movie.

I would say Inception is the best movie of the year with Shutter Island at #2.

Kick Ass is the best movie of the year for me.
Inception would swing in somewhere in the high teens.

I wasn't sure how I felt about Shutter Island the first time I saw it, but I don't think it held up to a second viewing.

Spoiler
Everyone is pretending except for DiCaprio, which would be fine except that...he's pretending, too. Deep down, he knows what's going on, and he fooled himself before anyone else did. So watching the movie a second time is like watching actors put on a play. Add to that his dream sequences, and the whole thing just leaves me longing to see something real. It looks good, and it's well acted, but it's boring because nothing is really happening.

5.x/10

I've got plenty of movies left to see, including Inception, but so far Splice is my #1.

Shutter Island is not #1 in my opinion. From the two films where Leonardo Dicaprio is the main lead, I would say Inception is #1 so far. But yet again Inception is not my "Official #1 of 2010", because I highly anticipate Sofia Coppola's Somewhere. This year, #1 might still be Inception or be changed to Somewhere.

For God's sake people! I only have so much tea to spit out and monocles to lose!

Although Kick Ass was fine, I wouldn't rate it anywhere near Inception. In fact, Scott Pilgrim has a healthy lead over Kick Ass as well, and it's a similar sort of movie.

For the record, here's my top 20 of the year (yeah, it's a lot, but my fiance and I like to go to the movies every week, so sue me ^_^):

1. Inception
2. Toy Story 3
3. Shutter Island
4. Easy A
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
6. Scott Pilgrim vs The World
7. The Social Network
8. The Town
9. Tangled
10. Robin Hood (good movie, despite what people say)
11. Alice in Wonderland
12. Unstoppable
13. Expendables
14. Red
15. Devil
16. Kick Ass
17. Paranormal Activity 2
18. A-Team
19. Iron Man 2
20. Despicable Me

Here's my top ten, though please note I'm only listing cinema releases here, not the guff I also watch on the horror / scyfy channel!

1: Kick Ass
2: Buried
3: [Rec] 2
4: Let Me In
5: Shutter Island
6: Iron Man 2
7: Piranha
8: Paranormal Activity 2
9: Expendables
10: Skyline

So, horror, sci-fi and action it is then.
