W.a.l.l.-e

Wally! You're adorable!!
I went to the movies last night and watched a midnight showing of Wally. It's awesome! I give it an A.

It's intelligent and adorable and doesn't spell everything out for you. It correctly assumes that you will figure out the story on your own, and you do. Even kids do.

Wall-e is the story of a little trash compacting robot that is the last of it's model number, all alone on Earth 700 years after the last humans have fled the planet because it became inhabitable. Alone with his friend the cockroach he dutifully continues his directive to clean up the Earth. Until one day when a cute alien probe comes to Earth and he falls in love.

I can't tell you the rest because it gives away the plot, but it's good. It's right up there with Pixar's other excellent movies. On a scale from 0001 to 1010, I give it a 1000.

I took the kids to see it this weekend, and they thoroughly enjoyed it, glued to the screen with big smiles.

Technically, I thought it was flawless. I'm always amazed at the state of animation, and this one is tops. There's plenty of humor for the adults to enjoy, plenty of references to other movies (2001, The Black Hole, TRON). My wife and I thought the storyline was okay, but nothing memorable.

We'll no doubt buy the DVD for the kids, and when they put it on to play, I'll probably find something else to do in the other room.

Does it haf a happy ending? Or is WallE recycled into a sewer pipe?

It's really quite a disturbing ending, and you almost guessed it. Wall-e is accidently recycled into a ham radio. Eve is stranded on Earth for all eternity, and can only turn on the radio to hear Wall-e's strained voice repeating her name, over and over, as she slowly rusts away.

Pixar is trying to branch out, following Disney's example with Touchstone Pictures. They were working on an animated sequel, "Who Stewed Roger Rabbit?", but stopped production after protests by B'nai B'rith. Pixar is in it for the dollars.

Amateur radio is still very active, and I don't see why it wouldn't continue into the future. Imagine being able to converse with a buddy near Alpha Centauri.

Actually, it's a happy, sappy, feel-good ending.

I wanna see it! I am a total Disney NUT! It looks cute. One of the things I love about Disney/Pixar collaborations are the references to earlier films you can find throughout them. Pixar wasn't involved in this one, but I LOVED Meet the Robinson's! The ending to that one makes me cry everytime. It has a great ending set to "Little Wonders" by Rob Thomas and shows a quote by Walt Disney. Very sappy. Making me a little misty just thinking about it.
