The Very Thought Of You - watched it with my mom... rather pointless and silly... always nice to see London AND Joseph Fiennes!

Claire. That's the same with the first Hellboy as well which so far to me, has the sharpest most colourful images out of all my other blu-ray dvds. Not sure what they're doing there but the other studios should follow them cause not all blu-ray films look fabulous.

I ordered Hellboy 2 but the dorks canceled on me. Said they were out of stock which I doubt. I should have gotten it for 13 bucks if they didn't do that.

Anyways, the last movie I watched was 'Layer Cake'. I'll say this though. The more I watch this movie, the better it becomes.

Watched Appaloosa (2008) last night.

Quote:
Well I watched Appaloosa tonight, and considering how I went from really eager after seeing trailers to sort of apprehensive after reading all of the feedback, I'd say it just about met my expectations.

I didn't read Robert Parker's book, but I have read several of his Jesse Stone books, so I'm familiar with his dialogue and I thought Ed Harris did a good job of preserving a lot of the light-hearted nature inherent in a lot of Parker's conversations.

I think the first 15 minutes or so until Renée Zellweger's arrival were superb. The scene with Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen in the bar as soon as they've been hired to be city marshals is hands down the most bad ass scene in a Western since the end of Unforgiven.

From that point on, though, the film is pretty much a roller-coaster of ups and downs. I had trouble buying Ed Harris' attachment to Zellweger, and the fact that she was a disloyal, dishonest woman made it even harder to buy.

What I thought was great, though, was the relationship between Harris and Mortensen. From the narration at the beginning and the end, I'm inclined to believe Parker's book is written from the Mortensen character's perspective and I don't like that the film didn't make that clear. I could be off-base, but that's the way it felt and I think that should've either been played up more/better or discarded entirely.

In any case, the relationship between the two gunmen made for some good comedy as well as good drama. The scene where Zellweger is thanking Harris and Mortensen for what they did, knowing they did it for her, I thought it was fantastic because there's that undercurrent present that's letting you know that Harris did what he did for her but Mortensen did what he did for Harris.

What also helped a lot was the understated performance from Mortensen. I've never noticed this before---and if I rewatch films with him, I'll surely be taking note of it now---but in Appaloosa for sure, he did a great job at being a very active listener in that his face always gave you insight into his thoughts and feelings in whatever situation he was in.

I commend Ed Harris on his second directorial effort and first effort at screenwriting and I always respect an actor when they can do a commendable job behind the camera while also not neglecting their performance. That said, Appaloosa didn't knock my socks off and, truthfully, never exceeded mere average. It was, however, enjoyable Western fair that I'd recommend to fans of the genre as well as fans of either Ed Harris and/or Viggo Mortensen.

My Bloody Valentine (1981) - 8.5/10.

Excellent little slasher flick. Was actually shot about an hour or so away from where I live. Check it out if you get a chance.

Friday the 13th (1980) - 8/10.

Started off with the first one for a marathon my friends and I are having. Definetly a cool flick.
