Movie Sequels

I'm just rewatching "Day of the Dead" after last nights effort with "Night of the Living Dead" and the remake of "Dawn of the Dead", I know tragic ... anyway this got me thinking about movie sequels and series.

What constitutes a sequel or series?
Does it just have to have the same character(s)? ... in that case Dracula and Frankenstein stuff would be considered a set of related movies even though actors, directors, writers and even studios change.

What is the oldest sequeled movie made?
I'm thinking that if a movie would require more than just the same 'character' (therefore excluding Dracs and Werewolf stuff) ... I'd probably go with George A. Romeo's Dead films.

What is the worst?
I only put this in because last evening of free to air tv showed Superman 3, one I had not seen and wish I never had

No way. That was a great remake.

I hated the '70's version though. I bought it and have been begging someone to take it off my hands ever since. :p

I would have to say 'Superman IV: The Quest for Peace' was the worst of that series Flame. I first suspected this once I saw Superman piratically take Louis on a space flight where she had no problem breathing in the air that wasn't there.

Usually there's at least one primary character that still play in the other sequels, either the bad ones, or the good ones. I don't know about Dracula and Frankenstein stuff, but I think that's the characteristic of sekuel movies. For example:

The same good primary characters:
Spiderman sequels
Superman sequels
Fantastic Four sequels
Mission Impossible sequels
Die Hard sequels

Usually it's heroistic movies.

The same bad primary characters:
The Ring sequels (Japanese version)
Chainsaw Massacre sequels
Ju On sequels

Usually it's horror or thriller movies.

Spiral, the ring 4th sequel for sure... it has no quality compared to the other three, and when you thought that three is enough... then suddenly you see the fourth one, you will find it boring, especially when it begins something that has been ended. It's only for commercial need I guess... Oh, I should add this one to the "movie that pissed you off" thread...

This answer varies quite a bit. It could be the simple reoccurence of a character and his exploits (James Bond, Indiana Jones, Spider-man), it could also be the reoccurence of events without any link to previous characters (Alien Versus Predator & AVP Requiem) or indeed another type of loose sequel is the spinoff (Elektra, Wolverine).

What is the oldest sequeled movie made?
The first sequel ever made was 1916's Fall of a Nation (Sequel to Birth of a Nation) .

What is the worst?
Worst sequel ever? That's tough, there are many, but I have to agree that 'Superman IV' is definitely in the top echelon along with 'JAWS: The Revenge' (Merely a 3D picture and never intended as a direct sequel, JAWS III was later released on home video as a loose sequel), 'Highlander 2' just made me want to slap the director Russell Mulcahy, who himself admitted on the Highlander commentary that H2 had a 'bullsh*t' script, and another quite bad sequel is 1943's 'Son Of Dracula' - whereas 'Daughter Of Dracula' was well made and in fact is regarded as one of the earliest psychological thrillers (though the mystery that unfolds is given away in the title anyway), 'Son' is just plain awful in its' squandered characters, throw away plot and total irrelevance.

this stunk badly yes. They even used the same scenes several times but put a different background in to make it look like another scene.
