I think all of the listed ones are very good, though I'd put Das Boot, Paths of Glory, Stalag 17, The Great Dictator, The Bridge on the River Kwai and The Great Escape over any of them with the exception of Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter. Apocalypse Now is the one I went with, though it's a close call between it and a few others for what I would consider the greatest war movie ever made.

... and that's just constraining myself to WWI, WWII and Vietnam. Other than those, I'd also go with The Sand Pebbles, Ran, Pan's Labyrinth, Kagemusha, and Zulu over most in the poll.

Honorable mentions: Tora Tora Tora, Mister Roberts, Casablanca (does that count?), The General ('26), Where Eagles Dare, The Counterfeit Traitor, Inglorious Basterds, Duck Soup, and a load of westerns that touch on the civil war.

... and, of course, I'm probably forgetting some.

As personal preference my two favourite war movies are:

The Deer Hunter, now this for produced the best performances in two of my favourite Actor's careers. De Niro and Walken. No war movie has ever affected me like this did, it is very powerful and masterfully done. I did notice however then when I tried to show this movie to my friends they became very restless and complained it lasted too long. Sigh, that's no reflection on this movie though. That's a reflection on the new generation of Die Hard Adrenaline Junkies. DHAJ!

Tae-Guk-Gi : The Brotherhood of War: Korean movie following 2 brothers forced to join the army. Yet another hard hitting movie. This movie is beautiful and touching, brutal and unforgiving. Everything that a war movie should be. I'm not really good at these little summaries as I find myself wanting to talk specifics but refuse to ever spoil a movie for someone. So if you haven't seen it. Go see it!

I forgot Das Boot for my list. One that I just remembered, but haven't seen mentioned is Bergman's Shame. Really like that one a lot.

My personal fave is Full Metal Jacket, but for very specific reasons. My good woman is French Vietnamese (parents Vietnamese, she was born and raised in France) and her parents rate FMJ as the most realistic of the Vietnam war movies.
And they should know.

For the sucky sucky 5 Dallah part? or you are just too beacoup?

Nice movies listed here, couple of my other personal favorites, Black Hawk Down and Stalingrado, not an ordinary war movie, if you like Das Boot this ones worth a check IMO. Together with FMJ a very realistic war movie that shows a personal approach to war and how the 'nazis' (just a bunch of kids here) were also just people with lives and kicked into this crazy disaster at Stalingrad. Operation Barbarossa, Von Paulus was not allowed to capitulate and his men were just slaughtered, in my personal top5 of war movies.

No, not at all. Have you ever seen/understand the movie or understand French? This was a quote from the movie.

Dude, your comment could be misconstrued as a racist slur: all Vietnamese women suck cock and are only interested in the American dollar.
I know it's a quote from the movie (I'm quite the movie buff, wouldn't you know), but you do not know me well enough to 'blag' and 'josh'.
I am not normally sensitive, but I spend enough time IRL dealing with 'where'd you buy her from' comments to even be interested here.
If I were feeling cruel I could make some disparaging remarks about The Netherlands (note my respect by ignoring the Holland temptation) forlorn resistance circa 1939....but I'm not that shallow.
Fella, you have well and truly raised my ire, and for that I apologise.
