Egypt

The big world news at the moment is the massive demonstrations in Egypt over the rule of President Mubarak.I studied Ancient Eygpt for a lot of years and that subject still fascinates me , but enough talk about the ancients let's move onto today's Egypt.
Since the 50's Egypt has been ruled by the military , first by Nasser (who died in office) and then by Anwar Sadat (who was assassinated while in office ) and finally of course by Mubarak.I was just 13 years old when Mubarak took over from Sadat in 1981 and here I am today at age 43 and Mubarak is still running the country-30 years he has been there and the people have finally had enough of him and his dictatorship. For years America has been telling him to have elections all to no avail , he has promised elections in September but really can anyone see him hanging out till then-I don't think so.

The world cannot afford dictators anymore , and I still think North Korea will crumble in my lifetime and will become a democratic society as really most of that countries cash goes into their army like the Soviet Unions did for over 50 years-it does not work this long term spending on arms , you need to build your economy with trade and good relations with other nations to make it in this world , something Mubarak will find out if he does not bail out soon.

I too agree, there is no way that the demonstrators are going to put up with Mubarak until September. I am not a fan of militant protesting and believe peaceful protesting works better on most occasions, Egypt however is tough to stand by that as they have wanted change for so long. I think North Korea's dictatorship may collapse when Kim Jong Il dies.

You are dead right about Korea there Calvin , all the world see's is big parades on show for their "Dear leader" but really behind the scenes the people are starving and there economy is in the toilet-he (Kim Jong Il) needs to pass into the next world sooner rather than later.

Egypt needs to sort this out quickly as there economy is bleeding badly , the amount of tourists that go there to see the ancient wonders is drying up and they rely on those dollars as a major source of income.

Mubarak has just said this morning that he will not be running for President again and no doubt he will flee the country with a suitcase full of cash before this is all over.

In his mind the country belongs to him, it's his country. He's not going to flee. The stupid protesters are fighting themselves not his government forces so there's no hurry. Someone in the crowd thew a rock or shot someone and now people are getting hurt but nothing is being accomplished. The person that stands up and says "enough, let's have peace," will be the next ruler.

I'm Egyptian and it really hurts to see what's happening to the people over there, Just this morning I saw a clip of a police van rushing into a crowd and hitting 3 people, God knows if the poor guy that was thrown across the road lived or died. The only reason this thing turned violent is because last Friday they cut off all internet and mobile connections and the police used tear gas and rubber bullets on the protesters and since then they've been using dirty tactics like disguising themselves as civilians and starting fights. There won't be peace with the way things have been going, there's like 300+ people dead now and there's no way these deaths can be ignored. Looks like things are gonna heat up again this Friday and I'd love to be there

I know someone who lives in Egypt, he's Dutch and moved to Egypt 2 years ago.
Now he's in the papers and on the news telling his story.
He said it's not fun to live there right now, but he's not planning on leaving the country.
