Hmmmm, l've been to both private and public schools...l'm at a private one now. I guess the discipline is far greater in private schools, particuarly where l am at in a Jesuit school. But what l hate is the idea of having a full school uniform here in Australia. You guys get it so easy in the US, having to wear no set uniform (ok, apart from those schools that Billionaires send their kids...).

a lot more schools are starting to do uniforms than they used to, especially those in big cities cuz it's seen as a way to cut visible signs of gang affiliation and prevent fights. but i never had to do uniforms...thank god. do all schools in australia do uniforms?

Yep. I wore a navy blue serge box pleat tunic that had to be no less than four inches below the knee, belted, with a white shirt (long sleeves, v-necked wool jumper and blazer with school crest for winter; short sleeves for summer) with the school tie in a Windsor knot. Opaque black stockings (no panty hose back then, no sheer tights allowed - we had to wear suspender belts!) and regulation navy blue school bloomers, in winter. White ankle socks that HAD to be folded down neatly for summer. Straw hats with the school ribbon had to be worn at all times outside the school grounds, ditto for navy blue gloves. Black lace-up shoes (no heels) were to be highly polished at all times.

At morning assembly at our C of E Girls Grammar school, the Head mistress would randomly lift girls' skirts with her cane pointer as they filed out. Any girl caught without regulation bloomers was put on detention or even sent home. Woe betide us if we were caught wearing 'witches' britches' - lovely nylon lacy undies like tights, but with the legs ending just above the knee. We loved them because they were naughty, but also because they kept that bare gap between the top of the stocking and the suspender belt warm.

All through this ritual the elderly school chaplain, dithery Mr McKnight, wouldn't know where to look!

oh dear...do you have a pic of your old uniform, avril? straw hats and gloves...eeep. and underwear checks? weird. pretty sure that wouldn't fly anymore. did you think the uniforms were ridiculous at the time, or do they mostly just sound that way now? it sounds very hot under so many clothes.

Meanwhile, in this photo I found in a uniform catalogue, the dark haired little girl in the front is wearing the kind of boxpleat tunic we used to wear.

They were hot in summer, but not warm enough in winter (try stockings and suspenders in winter, brrr). We could wear scarves, but they had to be royal blue, oh and our winter hats were royal blue velour. With the school ribbon in gold and royal blue.

We did think them ridiculously old-fashioned, even for a private girls' church school. The more daring of us used to bunch our tunics up over our belts, which we wore at our hips, we'd pull our socks up, throw our hats down the bus as soon as we got on them, loosen our ties, wear make-up, eat in uniform (gasp!) and if there happened to be a prefect on the bus we knew we'd be put on report. Three reports meant a detention.

Erm, I was a prefect. Strangely, my eyesight got terribly bad once I got on the bus.

Well, Ive been in unis all my life and I liked it becuz I didnt have to think of whut to wear every day. BEHOLD, it is absolutely the same, hahaha! Of course now, there is a Liberating Feeling in deciding everyday whether to wear my Hannibul LEcter tee shirt or my Franz Ferdinund tee shirt, or my light blue jeans or my khakis, wheeeeeee.

How cute, straw hats & gloves! THere is nothin more romantic than a naughty schoolgirl in a ribboned boater rolling down her tights & wading in a stream. Ahem ...

I like private schools. I even liked Eton, even though my juvenile tendencies at the time were vastly magnified! (Those young earls are dreadful childrun.) Pigsnoots favourite teacher ever wuz a Jesuit, wid whom he still corresponds. Jesuits are cool.

I have a job! But it's the same one I used to have. Yep. I went back. Weird huh?
That's why I haven't been online lately. I worked 42 hours in 4 days.

On the bright side, everyone was happy to see me again and two girls came out of hiding and I think they like me. Okay, 1 is a woman and the other is a girl. I think they missed me when I left and now they don't want to miss out on a second chance. Unfortunately, the girl I used to like doesn't work there anymore.

In other news, Tanya has been hanging out with Mike at work and has even taken family photos to work to show him. Meh. Oh well. I'm trying not to be stupid, moody, and jealous, and anyway, I've been working too much lately to take her out anywhere anyway.

CONGRATULATIONS on your Old/New Job! That is good news that you are working again becuz I just read a scary book called BAIT AND SWITCH: THE Futile Pursuit of the American Dream in which white collar people (managers, PR people) who used to earn $100,000 a year now cant find jobs or theyre unemployed & yrs at a time. Eeeeek! And these are smart people, some of who went to Hahvahd. De US is fucked.

So I am TRIPLY Glad you found a job again, SUnny! Huzzahhhhh!

yay for not being a stupid moody jealous boy! boys are being good to me right now too, so maybe they're not all stupid moody jealous, or at least not all the time. do you like either of these people who like you maybe? and congrats on the job!
