This is a very stirring movie about courage in the face of overwhelming odds. The film tells the story of Spartan king Leonidas (Richard Egan; Day Of The Wolves, the Big Cube) who successfully repelled the attack of the Persian army led by King Xerxes (David Farrar; I accuse, Escape To Burma)in 480 AD. Leonidas and his personal body guard, numbering only 300 men took a stand in the mountain pass of Thermopylae. This woefully small force was outnumbered by more than twenty to one, yet the defense of this strategic pass was successful, due in large part to the fierce loyalty of the small band of warriors to their King.
The film was made in 1962, and while the acting may be a bit stiff, the story it relates is historically accurate. Modern historians say that had Leonidas failed in his defense, then western civilization as we know it would not exist today.
This movie would benefit from a modern retelling with its battle scenes re-shot in the tradition of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart or Patriot. While the cinematogrophy and effects are dated, shot on location in Greece, the scenery in the movie is truly beautiful.
If you enjoyed such movies as the two mentioned above, or Glory, or Saving Private Ryan, then try to rent this one or catch it on cable. The story it tells is truly amazing.
I give this one 5 fallen kings out of a possible 6.
