"Major League" is a film mainly about baseball, of course, but what makes it different from other baseball films is that this one is actually funny, so people who don't even know how baseball is played could enjoy it. I liked the fact that it had a couple of actors who weren't too close to being famous back then, but later became stars; it's always nice to see famous actors before they were famous.
The Cleveland Indians are the worst team in the Major Leagues, and this year they'll be owned by Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton), a woman who wants to move to Florida, and in order to do that she wants to make sure the Indians suck once again, since Miami offered them a deal to build a stadium if they moved over there. She makes a list of players to hire this season, and they're either rookies, old guys or freaks. Mrs. Phelps does everything she can to make the team lose, but they feel it's their duty to improve this year, and her attitude inspires them.
Let me introduce you to some of the players. Ricky Vaughn (Charlie Sheen), a pitcher who just got out of jail and has a kickass haircut; Jake Taylor (Tom Berenguer), an old catcher who was once pretty good, and is now trying to get back to his old girlfriend Lynn (Rene Russo); Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert), a cuban who practices voodoo; Willie Mays Hays (Wesley Snipes), who can run pretty fast; Eddie Harris (Chelcie Ross), whose weird 'techniques' you have to see to believe; and the manager Lou Brown (James Gammon), who has managed baseball teams before but not in the majors, he seems to know his stuff. And how could we not mention the comentator Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker).
This cast is pretty funny, some of these guys have some pretty cool lines, and they deliver them as if they were made to say that. Sheen, with a crazy haircut, played a really cool tough guy, he was one of my favourite characters. Cerrano was also a pretty funny character, and the manager Lou was the reason for a few good laughs.
You could say Major League might be a bit silly, but it served it's purpose: to make people laugh. I find this comedy to be much funnier than most of the stuff they make nowdays ("Austin Powers" !?), and this one is for everyone, from children -excluding a few scenes- to old people who don't know what baseball is. The comentator is played hilariously by Bob Uecker, he said some funny stuff through that mic. If you wanna have a good time, you should check "Major League" out, it's anything you want except unfunny.
