When you first hear about "The Impostors", or watch it's trailer, the first impression you get is that it's a dumb movie not worth watching. I would have never watched this film if it wasn't for the cast; there are quite a few well-known actors in here, and after I found out Stanley Tucci actually wrote and directed this film I decided to give it a try.
Arthur (Tucci) and Maurice (Oliver Platt) are two stage actors who are currently unemployed and running out of money. They're going through such a bad situation that they even plan to fool the owner of a store in order to get some food, but instead this event ended up giving them tickets to a theatrical play. As actors, they think that the main star of the play, Jeremy Burton (Alfred Molina) is very untalented. After the play Burton finds out about this and starts chasing Arthur and Maurice, who hide inside a box. Next morning they wake up only to find out that box was on a ship that is going to Paris, and to make it worse Mr. Burton is on the ship too.
Once they were in the ship the film started introducing a bunch of characters, each with a different problem. There's a deposed Queen who feels drepressed, a divorced singer that feels suicidal, a divorced woman looking for rich men and even a guy who's trying to blow up the ship. While the usage of several characters might have disturbed some people, I find it quite cool. This is a comedy, and each character has it's own story to tell, it's not like the fact that there are many characters is going to prevent us from being able to follow the storyline or something, they're just there in an attemp to give us a laugh.
Platt and Tucci arer eally great together, I must admit that both of them were involved in most of the scenes that I found funny. These two guys can really act, they did a great job here, while Tucci with managed successfuly complete the second directing work of his career. As I mentioned before, there is a great cast in this film, maybe some of these actors are on screen for just a few seconds, but here are some of faces that you could recognize: -Besides Platt, Tucci and Molina- Steve Buscemi, Woody Allen, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Campbell Scott, Allison Janney, Dana Ivey, Tony Shalhoub and a few others. Although I wouldn't say the story is brilliant or anything like that, I found it well written for this kind of film; Compared to some other comedies I've seen this is a masterpiece, but of course there are much better ones. Maybe you want to see if you've got nothing to do, but don't set your expectations too high.
