Review:

Your mama too, your mama too and your mama too, until there is no more mama left. Alfonso Cuarón, with his film, bellows at his audience one by one to seduce and invite to see his sneaky tale which is about Mexico as a beautiful sad woman and horny lost youth at the same time.

As a comedy it is very serious and real; and as a drama it is often hilarious.

Julio and Tenoch (Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna) are getting ready to spend their maybe the riskiest summer vacation right after their high school graduation. Julio, a working class teeanger and Tenoch, the son of a corrupted governor, are sharing a unique friendship with competition in a measurably perilous nature. They know they are young and think that physical orgasm as a mission given by their god-testesterone. However, their amateur life perspectives trap them into quantitavity rather than quality. That's where the mature beauty gets ready to whip them with their own penis.

Luisa (Maribel Verdu), Tenoch's cousin's wife meets our guys at a superficial wedding, while ironically Luisa is suffering from her own faithless marriage at the same time. In order to get away from her depressed life, she agrees to take a road trip with Julio, and Tenoch. As a seductive Spaniard woman, she seems to like the most exciting adventure to 2 friends for the summer, which later turns out to be the most important lesson for the rest of their lives.

Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón brothers's story is so vigilantly multiplex that the story line makes an infinity circle towards the end and want you to go back and watch again since it already changed Julio, Tenoch and the rest of us forever. As an interestingly effective approach, Alfonso Cuarón often cuts the film's audio thoroughly, to inject the voice of the narrator, who gives niceties about the surroundings providing other dimensions in the time and space of these 3 characers' journey.

Secretly and heavily, the real life in Mexico is introduced by the unique voice which calls us to dream of the details about the dead man's life lying on the freeway, the blood on the wings of the chickens that are trapped inside a wrecked truck; and the future hotel that Campos fan, the fisherman will have to be the janitor of on his own beach. The structure of the story exposes gradually the chaos and cruelty against the lower class in any developing (or usually being corrupted) country. The story is around 105 minutes but the narrator's information opens our imagination towards the time, location and the characters' backgrounds endlessly. At the end, it feels like a thick novel even though it comes in a thin book cover. The sex scenes are so funny and well staged that one has no time and need to get aroused while seeing the nude characters in motion. The forgotton people of Mexico brings extra importance and flavor to this new Mexican cinema piece.

When "Y Tu Mamá También" was released in Mexico in the summer of 2001, it was the biggest opening for a Mexican film in Mexico with more than $2 million.

However, this film was not anything more than another R rated artsy fartsy FOREIGN TnA movie for our audience in U.S. while it is actually anything but...

This film is funnier than a blockbuster comedy, more dramatic than an Oscar winner, and more honest about the hormones and emotions than most people I know or I used to know.
