For those who thought "The Old Man and the Sea" was boring, you definitely don't wanna watch this Hemingway novel. As books his novels are good, but when someone tries to make movies out of them the results aren't very pleasant.
Arno (Benjamin Bratt) is the only person who knows some waters around Cuba, so a man called Ortega (Nestor Serrano) asks him to transport three men without papers from Cuba. But Arno is a straight guy and he doesn't want to do the job, so he and Ortega end up fighting. When Ortega pulls out a knife, Arno is forced to stab him.
While this is happening, a luxury yacht sinks during a storm. The owners, who drowned when it sank, were rich people with lots of jewelry, and on top of that they had a safety box filled with gold bars. Jean Pierre (Armand Assante) sees Arno and since he knows that he has found the yacht he tells him that Ortega is dead and that he should stay hidden, so he should tell him where the yacht is so they can get the stuff out and be rich. Arno has no option but to agree to this.
Arno's girlfriend Conquina (Mili Avital) just got into town, he hadn't seen her in three years; they are now together and want they desire to get that money and have a rich life. Jean Pierre and Janine (Simone-Elise Girard) want the exact same thing, but everybody is making their own plans in the meantime. Jean Pierre tells his wife Janine that they'll take their half of the money and leave, but he also tries to convince Conquina to get Arno's part and leave with him together; Janine tells Conquina to leave Arno as soon as she gets the money; Arno tells Conquina to follow Jean Pierre's game and get his part, and they will leave with everything. They'll have some problems, like Arno finding out that Ortega wasn't really dead and Jean Pierre was lying to him, and later Ortega wanting to take their money.
The film is quite boring I must say, specially the first half, when I considered stop watching it. Benjamin Bratt screws up most films he is in, from now on I'll try to avoid his films. His performance in this film was his average one, in other words, no big deal. The rest of the cast was slightly better, but it wasn't enough to save the film. The story isn't really bad, but it was told in a pretty boring way, nothing exiting ever happens and the ending has a small twist you wouldn't expect. It's not that bad, but I wouldn't recommend it.
