Hunter Adams (Robin Williams) has admitted himself to a mental hospital after suffering a huge case of severe depression. His roommate has a mental condition where he can see invisible rodents running around causing him to cry and scream. Adams yells for the security guards to come sedate him, which calms him down. While lying in their beds, Adam's roommate complains he has to use the bathroom, but the rats are blocking his way. Adam's decides to play along in a memorable scene where the pretend to go to war with the mice. For the first time, Adams sees the joy of making somebody happy. While with another patient, Adams gets the nickname, Patch, because he has the gift of making people feel good.
With a new reason for living, Adams goes to medical school as he is determined to become a doctor. Along the way he meets a beautiful Carin Fisher (Monica Potter) and meets a few more friends while in medical school.
"Patch Adams" is one of those feel good movies. As Adams first gets into the medical community, he learns all the problems with it, and vows to change it. Long waits and lengthy forms people have to fill out disturb Adams. He also witnesses the cold attitude doctors have towards terminally ill patiens. His goal in live is to open up his own clinic, where the your treatment is free and you are cured with laughter.
This movie has funny moments throughout, while it retains as being a serious drama. Roadblocks and tragedys along the way temporarily damper the fun in "Patch Adams" but the solid story remains strong with a lovable cast.
"Patch Adams" is based on true story, so you can't argue how impossible it is to do the things Adams did. Patch's style of humor and way of cheering up people is uplifting, while at the same time, he gives a good solid comical routine that Robin Williams is known for.
There really aren't any flaws in "Patch Adams." A good concept and strong actors will makes "Patch Adams" a family favorite. Brief scenes of intense drama, quicken up the pace and will prevent you from becoming bored. "Patch Adams" is a strong hearted movie and Williams fans will appriciate it.
