This is a film about bad choices compounded by plausible lies. Scott B. Smith adapted his own 1994 novel for the screen, and I don’t think anyone else could have done it justice. He manages to transfer an excellent book to the screen, and the results were pure magic.
Without giving too much away, the plot revolves around two brothers, Hank (Bill Paxton; Titanic, Twister, True Lies) and Jacob Mitchell (Billy Bob Thornton; Sling Blade, Pushing Tin), who, along with their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe; The green Mile; Another Day In Paradise), find over four million dollars aboard a crashed plane in a nature preserve. The find is very timely, since Hank and his wife Sarah (Bridget Fonda; Jackie Brown, Touch), are about to have a baby, and Jacob and Lou are both unemployed.
The men hatch what seems to be “A simple plan” to keep the money until the spring thaw, and see if anyone makes a claim on it when the plane is officially discovered. Unfortunately, the plan becomes anything but simple, when the situation is complicated by murder, blackmail, and treachery.
The story is a fascinating study of what can go wrong when people find themselves in a desperate setting of their own manufacture. The long time off-screen friendship of Paxton and Thornton lends credibility to their on scene portrayal of the brothers, Hank and Jacob, making this relationship totally convincing.
Combine the great writing and the superb acting, and you have a movie that promises to hold you until the very last scene. Filmed in St. Paul Minnesota, temperatures for some of the outdoor location scenes dipped as low as 56 degrees below zero, making one appreciate the talents and dedication of the actors who appeared in this film.
Don’t miss this one… it is sure to please!
My Rating: 6 out of 6 bundles of cash.
