"Once Around" is an unique movie, it's funny and romantic but it's not the usual romantic comedy we're used to, it's deeper. Director Hallstrom managed to give the movie a slight touch of 'seriousness' by adding some drama to it, and making the plot as real and powerful as possible.
It all starts when Renata Bella's (Holly Hunter) sister is about to get married to a nice young man, Peter (Tim Guinee); some people start telling Renata that now she's the only one in the family that isn't married, and that puts some preasure on her. So Renata decides to talk about the subject with her boyfriend, but he actually says he doesn't want her anymore, and dumps her. After her sister went on a trip on her Honey Moon, Renata is lonely and depressed, so she decides to look for a new job, so she goes to another city hoping to find the right thing for her, and at the same time she could forget about her problems.
But Renata forgot about her problems a little bit too quickly. She met a successful salesman, Sam Sharpe (Richard Dreyfuss) who, despite looking at least 20 years older than her, became her new boyfriend. Renata and Sam seem to be perfect for each other, so after introducing him to her family and doing all the usual stuff, they get married. But not everyone is completely happy about this, Sam is very loud and obnoxious, and it's making Renata's parents angry. Sam is not the usual guy, he's always talking and always has to come up with something, even in inappropiate moments, this makes Renata's whole family fight with each other.
Hallstrom was clever and didn't only show the annoying side of Sam, because that would have made the audience hate him, so through the film we also understand that Sam always wanted to the best for everyone. The ending might not be the one you wish for a movie like this, but this sort of things happen all the time in real life.
Lots of great perormances in this movie, specially Dreyfuss and Hunter, many people say this is Hunter's best acting work up to date. Danny Aiello and Gena Rowlands were both great as Renata's parents; Laura San Giancomo as her sister and Danton Stone as her brother were both pretty good also. Great direction by Hallstrom. This is a good movie for all audiences, it shows how life has ups and downs and how we all must try to spend the time we have here in the best way possible.
