Few sequels can manage to outdo their predecessors. By a rule of thumb, they always seem to lose the edge of the original. Ninety-five percent of the time, sequels are strictly studios milking every penny out of a successful franchise.
Now, the other five percent of sequels actually serve a purpose. You've got James Cameron's "Aliens." Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". Or, this movie, George Lucas' "The Empire Strikes Back."
"Empire" is widely considered the best movie in the Star Wars saga, probably because of its decidedly darker tone from the original. All truth be told, this really is darker and more mean-spirited than its predecessor. In the first ten minutes, we learn that the Rebel Alliance is in shambles, hiding on a desolete ice planet called Hoth, and we see Luke be attacked by a snow monster. Before the first half hour is over, The Rebel Base is destroyed by attacking Imperial forces, the Millienium Falcon is falling apart, and Luke is seperated from Han and Leia on his quest to become a Jedi Knight.
And it's all downhill from there.
Han and Leia are dogged through an astriod field by Vader's Star Destroyer, Luke's X-Wing is stuck on the swamp planet Dagobah (where he recieves guidance from the wise yet diminuitive Yoda), and C-3PO is blasted into severel different bits.
Oh, yeah, Han is captured by the bounty hunter Boba Fett, Luke's hand is loped off by Vader, Leia is handed to the Empire over by a traitorus "friend", and we are all given a shocking revelation about Darth Vader's true identity.
So, with all this depressing stuff happening, why is it so well liked?
Simple: its a heckuva lot of fun watching it. The special effects are top notch, the acting is even better this time around, and it has one of the best science fiction scripts ever written. This is a must for any lover of movies.
Rated PG for sci-fi violence.
