When police negotiator Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) discovers that some other police officers he knows are trying to set him up to blame him for the murder of his friend Nate, he takes 4 hostages in a government bulding and says wont come out until they solve the problem.
Danny is one of the best negotiators around, his work is to talk with people who aren't willing to be reazonable in dangerous situations. Nate told him that some of their so called 'friends' were stealing money from a fund, and that he knew this through an informant. A few days later, Nate was murdered. Roman is innocent, but he can't prove that unless they find the informant. Since he knows he can't trust people he knows, he asks for another good negotiator from another town, Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey). Sabien arrives in about 20 minutes and starts talking with Danny.
Danny knows the rules of engagement, so he seals the bulding pretty well in order to stop the cops from listening or watching him. Sabian is honest with Danny and tells him he is there to get the hostages safe, not to save him. Danny gets help from one of the hostages, Rudy (Paul Giamatti) and starts looking for information in a computer, which belongs to inspector Niebaum (J.T. Walsh), who Danny thinks is one of the people responsible for all of this.
Putting Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin spacey in a film together was one of the best ideas someone could ever have. Two of the coolest and better actors of their time, they are incredibly cool to watch. J.T. Walsh died shortly after this film was made, the film was dedicated to him, and so was Jack Nicholson's Oscar for As Good As It Gets. This film is truly great, keeps you hooked up the whole time and it never gets boring, I'd recommend it to anyone.
