“Joe Dirt” is the kind of movie that critics love to hate, and I have to agree with them on this one. It is a forgettable film that has a few good laughs (yes, just a few), but nothing much of anything else.
Joe Dirt (David Spade) is a hick, but not just your ordinary hick. He is an optimist who always thinks that things will get better for him despite his many many setbacks in life. When he was just eight years old, Joe was left behind during a trip to the Grand Canyon, and ever since then, he has been laboriously searching for his parents. Thus, we follow his adventures (or more like misadventures) as he tries to reconnect with his roots.
Well, first of all, I think David Spade is a great comedian. I loved his skits when he was on Saturday Night Live, and I’ve seen him display his wit in countless interviews. However, for a movie to work, the script has to come first. You can’t just string a whole series of jokes together and call it a film. Of course, I might let this go if the jokes are actually funny, as in the case of “Scary Movie”, but “Joe Dirt” had only a few amusing ones. Although I have to give the movie credit for one extremely funny scene, which Roger Ebert lambasted, and I quote “that the act of being buried in crap is not in and of itself funny”. I thought David Spade made it really funny though.
While Joe Dirt was somewhat likable, there is no other character in the film that is remotely worth mentioning. That is except for one…Christopher Walken had a small, yet delightful role in the film. Like his cameo appearances in “Sleepy Hollow” and the new Fatboy Slim music video for “Weapon of Choice” (the latter of which I think is his most hilarious performance yet), Walken’s presence on screen makes one sit up straight and watch closely with a smile.
Nevertheless, “Joe Dirt” is an unabsorbing movie, with intermittent laughs (a few strong ones though) and lackluster characters. It is just not worth talking about anymore.
