Back when this movie first came out, many critics said it was Steve Martin's best so far, and after watching it today I realize all those people who say this is one of the most underrated films they've seen, have a point. It might be because it's rather old, but most people nowdays don't even know about it, what a shame.
Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Steve Martin) is the best brain surgeon around, he even developed his own technique and theory. He hits a hot woman while driving his car, Dolores (Kathleen Turner), who will marry a man just for his money. Dr. Hfuhruhurr -Lets call him Michael from now on- instantly falls in love with her, and after he performs surgery on her, they get married. He will later find out that she doesn't really love him, but she then pleases him in order to get the money he will get from a relative of his that recently died.
Michael goes to Europe to give a speech about his theory, and he's staying at a hotel where there's an "Elevator murderer" around, who -obviously- is killing people in the elevator. Michael meets another doctor that has also been working a lot with brains, and he discovers he has several brains kept alive with a fluid he invented. Here's where the interesting part starts, Michael is able to communicate, through some sort of telepathy, with one of the brains, it's a woman called Anne. (Voice by Sissy Spacek). They fall in love, and Michael wants to be together with her, but he must find her a body. Meanwhile, Dolores is planning to act against him.
"The Man with Two Brains" is not only a great example of good comedy, but it also has an interesting story. Unlike most comedies nowdays, which have a poor plot where they can just throw the jokes in, this flick had a nice story, with nice characters played beautiful by the cast. That's another thing I liked, all the characters were normal, nobody was a freak or one of those guys who keep screwing things up. Martin and Turner did a great job with their roles.
This is a good kind of humor, I reckon it would fit most people's taste, including grown ups who dislike teeny flicks like "American Pie", since most of the laughs here don't come from funny faces, they're usually good lines said in the right situation. I must admit I wasn't exactly laughing too much, but I don't laugh to easily with films, and I still think they did a great effort to make the jokes funny. If you're in the mood for a good comedy flick, watch this. It's also nice for me to see what Steve Martin and Kathleen Turner looked like the year I was born.
