The typical vampire film consists in very bad vampires doing evil things and some slayers trying to hunt them. In this film nothing changed, the 'slayers' even called themselves that word! Nothing new was brought to this vampire film, except for some well done gory scenes, which by themselves wont make any film good.
Jack Crowe (James Woods) and his crew of vampire hunters attack a small place which is supossed to be a vampire nest, and they kill every single vampire they take out of there; that's the opining scene. The professional slayers need to celebrate their hunting with some alcohol and sex, so at night they're at a small hotel with some prostitutes, but they weren't able to have much fun since a 'master vampire' (which is a normal vampire, just much stronger) shows up at the place and starts killing everybody in the goriest way possible. In here you see a few heads flying around, a couple of hearts being ripped off by hand, all sort of stuff. This master vampire, Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith) even knows Jack's name, so Mr. Crowe knows Valek is up to something big. By the end of the night, only Jack, his partner Montoya (Daniel Baldwin) and a hooker who has been bitten by Valek are the only ones that are able to escape. They find a usage for that girl, Katrina (Sheryl Lee) so they don't bother killing her.
Jack talks to the Cardinal Alba (Maximilian Schell), who tells him about the deal Valek is probably up to; There's a group of master vampires who are trying to get their hands on some black cross that will prevent vampires from being affected by daylight. Jack, Montoya, Katrina and an unexperienced Father, Adam (Tim Guinee) intend to stop Valek from completeing his evil plan.
I personally can't say anything about John Carpenter's work, he's supossed to be the "master of horror" but I have not seen any of his previous work. What I can say is that he either lost his skills or he needs some inspiration, because this film was pretty bad. The gore in this film was pretty good, nearly all the killing scenes are pretty decent, but the story lacks suspense and that's pretty bad, after a while you get bored of watching the same old faces from the same old point of view; It'd have been much better if some mystery was added to the plot, and maybe even a couple of small twists, but I guess the creators of this just weren't in the mood. The acting isn't bad, everyone in here was believable, it's the rather boring story that makes this film difficult to enjoy. I think it's a very poor vampire film and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
