This movie, like many musicals of the 50's and 60's, is based on a Broadway show. With a title like "The Pajama Game" I was expecting something like "Bye Bye Birdie." Tennagers, sleepovers, etc. Those things come to mind when one hears a title like "The Pajama Game." But actually, it's NOT. When "The Pajama Game" openend on Broadway, it was excitingly different because it didn't deal with glitzy showgirls, etc. It dealt with the lives of workers in a pajama factory 9Hence the title).
The story, pretty lame actually. The workers of the Sleep Tite Pajama Factory want a raise, a 7.5 cent raise John Raitt plays Sid, the new superintendant of the factory. He falls in love with Babe (doris Day), the union grievances representative for the workers. There's a very good song that Sid sings, "Hey There," that I really enjoy. "Hey There, you with the stars in your eyes." I like Broadway, but I'm not gay! Don't you DARE sterotype me like that, or I will track you down and kill you!
What really makes this show so engaging is Bob Fosse's sexy staging. Bob Fosse was a genius! He direted some of the BEST movie musicals... "Sweet Charity," "Cabaret," "All That Jazz," He was a god of the theater as well. His work has been imitated thousands of times. But the choreography in this movie is old school Fosse. Back in the day when he was just a choreographer, and he was still great back then.
The show was great on Broadway, although I never saw it, that was 40 or 50 years before I was born, but I have heard the soundtrack. And, with the exception of Doris Day, everyone opn the cast & crew are reprising their same roles from the play; a very talented group!
I give it a 6 because, although great, it's a movie. I LOVE movies, but when it comes to movies based on musicals, the stage is always better. Althought I desire to direct movies, nothing can beat the thrill of watching or performing in a play before a live audience.
