Based on Graham Greene's early 1950's novel, Adapted and directed by Neil Jordan. He makes a romantic noir, worthy of old style Hollywood.
Maurice Bendix (Ralph Fiennes) is a novelist living in London circa 1946. In a chance meeting with an old friend, Henry Miles (a droopy-faced Stephen Rea), Bendix begins to feel old feelings for Miles' wife, Sarah (Julianne Moore) who broke off their steamy affair two years previous.
Bendix hires a private eye (played by the wonderfully underused actor Ian Hart) and begins an obsession, trying to find out why Sarah had abruptly broken off their affair.
Much of the film is rainy, like all of the character's hearts. It is also filmed with Catholicism which was a major theme in Greene's works back then.
The film is really hit or miss, it's not a boring picture, but is certainly a downer.
Amazing photography by Roger Pratt, lush soft focus lighting really sets the mood for this piece.
To close, the film is well made and clearly a labor of love for director Jordan. I hadn't heard a thing about the film until it was out to limited release.
I haven't seen Edward Dmytryk's 1955 version of the same film, and an interesting experiment was released on DVD. Both versions on one disc. Should be interesting to compare.
The Music (by Michael Nyman) is also noteworthy. Lots of cello used.
I can't wholeheartedy recommend "The End Of The Affair", though I liked it quite a bit. Jordan certainly is proving himself to be an amazing stylist going from genre to genre with ease.
A great, if not excellant film.
