"Working Girl" is a wall street comedy that didn't really work for me.
Melanie Griffith plays a lowly assistant to Sigourney Weaver. Griffith desperately wants to become a big success in wall street, but with her cute voice and 'body for sin' all she ever gets are jerks (one played by Kevin Spacey) hitting on her.
She comes up with a great deal, and tells her boss, Weaver. Who then proceeds to go behind her back and make the deal without giving due credit to Griffith.
In a chance of fate, Weaver breaks her leg skiing, and Griffith accidentally finds out of Weaver's misgivings and decides to go ahead without Weaver's help.
But... she needs help.
Enter Jack Trainor (played by Harrison Ford, who gives a phoned in charming performance). Griffith and Ford meet at a party and Griffith ends up in Ford's bed, she's made a mistake. Now Ford will never take her seriously.
But she is wrong, and they both work on the deal together.
It turns into a thriller by the end, but it had lost me midway through. I couldn't get past the bad 80's haircuts and boring tale of a Cinderella wall street woman who just wants some amount of success.
The film is a backwards "Graduate" (also directed by Nichols), as Benjamin was looking for a way out of success , and Griffith is looking for a way in.
The best part of the film is the supporting cast Joan Cusack, Oliver Platt, Kevin Spacey, and an undeserving subplot with Alec Baldwin playing Griffith's husband.
The film won an academy award for Best Music (Carly Simon) and some nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actress (Griffith), and supporting actress (Weaver and Cusack).
