How can a sequel screw up the second half of one of the greatest fantasy stories ever? Watch this and find out.
For those of you who don't know, the 1984 classic The NeverEnding Story only covered the first half of Michael Ende's beloved novel. Now, since there was a great, epic second half of the book (about Bastian's adventures in the new Fantasia that he helped re-create), a sequel was a common sense move.
Unfortunatley, Wolfgang Peterson, the director of the first one, did not return for the sequel (he probably read the script). They decided to wait six years to do the second half, so Barret Oliver and Noah Hatheway were too old to return as Bastian and Atreyu.
But the greatest mistake they made was they took a Grimm-brother's style fantasy and turned it into kiddie hour. They basically threw the story that the book had and came up with a Barney version. Gone is the Battle for the Ivory Tower. Gone is any sense of wonder that the original had in such a great quanity.
So, what is the movie? Well, Bastian is tackleing his fear of hieghts (he can't jump off a diving board, but we later see him flying through the air on a luckdragon), so he is wisked away to Fantasia so he can do battle with Xyidae, a woman who only wants to bring order to chaos....yeah. And hey, even though she's got BAD PERSON written all over her, Bastian's an understanding guy. He can just forget that she tryed to kill him when he came to her castle. Now he's gonna get into the same carriage as him and will ride with her- ON HER TIME! Surronded by HER GUARDS! Let's instert some LOGIC here, folks!!
Avoid. Watch the first, and wait for the miniseries that's coming out later this year that will cover the entire book.
