John Waters is my favorite director. He's not the best director or writer around, but he's my favorite. His sense of humor and style go hand in hand with my way of thinking. Of all the movies I own, I have more John Waters movies than anything by any other director. It's really amazing how one can go from low budget camp movies that offend, like Pink Flamingos, to larger budgeted more widely accepted movies like Cry-baby and Pecker.
Waters' new film, Cecil B. Demented is a lot different thatn waht Waters has done before. There's more action and plot than usual, but the story, dialogue and situtations are pure Waters. A group of filmmakers (Stephen Dorff, Alicia Witt, et al) kidnap a famous Hollywood actress (Melanie Griffith) and force her to star in their movie. At first she is rather reluctant, and disagrees with their point of view. Their view is that all Hollywood movies are evil.
The movie then goes on this wild reide that pretty much spits in the face of the studio system. They attack a showing of "Path Adas - The Director's Cut," and raid the set of "Forrest Gump 2." The way Waters makes each one of his characters different, without focusing the movie on a single character is pretty good. The movie is about the ideal these characters have, not about the characters themselves.
As with any Waters' film, the ending is really something that has to be seen to believed. The movie is a GREAT comedy. It's not the best movie in the world, but it's one of Waters' best. I gave it a seven because I liked it, it was entertaining. It's a little outlandish and unrealistic, but that's how Waters' works. If you're not really a fan of John Waters, you may not care too much for this movie.
