Rocky IV is many people's favourite of all the 5 Rocky's made up to this day, and why is that, you might ask? Well, to put it in the simplest terms, it's because of the cool fights. Seriously, folks, the first "Rocky" film had a touching story, about Rocky, his wife, and a few problems that didn't even concern his fight for the title. But here, it's just a simple story, and half the film is about Rocky and his opponent's training, and the fight, which was quite long, but is worth watching every second of it.
By this time, after three Rocky films, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is a good friend of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) -actually they were friends since Rocky III when Apollo trained him-. Apollo is retired from boxing, Rocky is still the Heavyweight champion of the world. A big guy from Russia, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) comes to america and says he would defeat any oponent. Apollo sees this on TV and wants to have an exhibition match with Drago, just to "teach him a lesson", as he says himself.
Apollo and Drago get on the ring, and Drago beats the living hell out of Apollo. Rocky wants to stop the fight, because Apollo is badly hurt, but Mr. Creed wants to keep fighting, he wouldn't just give up. On the second round something awful happens, Drago murdered Apollo. "What began as a game, has ended in a tragedy" as one of the commentator says. After this Rocky wants to take revenge, so he decides to fight Drago. As the champion, he can chose the date and place, and he chooses Russia on December 25th.
Rocky travels to Russia with Paulie (Burt Young) and Apollo's former trainer Duke (Tony Burton), and moves to a cabin in the middle of the mountains. Rocky starts training in a very primitive way, lifting rocks and running through the mountains. While Drago is working on a high technology gym, doing the same exercises as Rocky, but with sofisticated machines. They train for a while, and then they are ready for the fight. Of course, everybody could guess, after Apollo died, that Rocky is definitely going to win.
The fight is pretty long and cool, I really liked it, more entertaining than in previous Rocky films. The music is also very good, it gets you in the mood of that kind of action. Sylvester Stallone actually wrote and directed this film, and surprisingly it didn't suck. This is my favourite Rocky, at least if I only take in account the fight scenes. If you don't like this kind of film then you wont enjoy it, but if you liked the other Rocky's maybe you'll find it entertaining. This is also Dolph Lundgren's best performance, maybe because he had nearly no dialogues.
