Colonel Benjamin 'The Ghost' Martin (Mel Gibson) has finished fighting after the French and Indian War, and has retired to his estate where he takes care of his family of six, and works on his hobby of building rocking chairs. He is quickly called to a town's meeting where a decision is to be made on whether or not the American colonies should go to war with Great Britain, in order to win their freedom. Col. Martin instantly objects and refuses, but a string of events that involve his children leave him no choice, but to fight.
"The Patriot" is a fictional documentary that takes us back to the days of the Revolutionary War. Many famous characters are brought back to life such as the cruel Colonel William Tavington. (Jason Isaacs) Isaacs is brilliant, and forces you to hate him as he does the most in-humane acts of mankind, all to defeat and to take out Gibson's character, as well as ensuring an easy British victory. Young, Heath Ledger joins the cast as Gibson's oldest son, who wants nothing more than to join the continental army, even though it is against his father's wishes. The acting is some of the finest I've seen. The emotions displayed grab you by the neck, and don't let go.
The screenplay was also done well. I've taken some of my favorite movie quotes out of "The Patriot's" dialogue. There is also light humor that keeps you sane, where you wouldn't find any in some of Spielberg's works. Although, the cheery upbeat feelings in this movie don't last long, especially when Isaacs is on camera.
The battle scenes in "The Patriot" are life like and include some of the most memorable battle scenes of any war epic. The music throughout is deep, as John Williams adds to mood with another excellent score.
"The Patriot" is a little long in duration, but the final battle scenes are well worth the wait. The direction of Roland Emmerich flows steady and captures the entire scene, as much is going on in the final battle scenes. "The Patriot" is a must see for any fans of war movies, Mel Gibson, or action flicks that keep you entertained through the entire movie. "The Patriot" is an accurate telling of America's history, and should be enjoyed by all.
