“The Fast and the Furious” is a high-octane thriller where winner takes all, and the losers go home with nothing. Dominic Toretto, (Vin Diesel) runs a breed of hardcore street racers, that take over the city streets at night. Brian Spindler, (Paul Walker I) is an undercover cop who tries to fit in with the racers, in order find the people who have been responsible for the recent burglaries that have been happening in the city.
Of course, this is Hollywood, so the plot stretches further. Walker, who is suppose to be responsible for arresting Toretto, ends up becoming his best friend and falls madly in love with his sister. Also, his own thrill for racing delays the progress of the bust.
Overall, “The Fast and the Furious” is a pretty decent movie. The racing scenes are exciting and suspenseful, but only occur a few times throughout the movie. The characters aren’t brilliant, and a debut appearance by rapper Ja Rule, doesn’t help any. At least the scriptwriters were smart enough not to give him a leading role, in fact, you see him less than you do The Rock, in “The Mummy Returns.”
The movie works well with what it has, and is pretty much what I expected. The flashy cars and thrilling plot will help it become one of the biggest movies of the summer, as most teenagers will see it for a fun time, and fun is what you will get. Cars that race, with the stakes at several thousands of dollars. One good point about this movie, is that it explores the culture of racing, and how much money some people invest in their cars.
The last racing scene was awesome, a showdown between the two leading characters, that ended with many of the people in the theatre audience clapping. Unfortunately, the final minutes ended the same way one of those racing cars would, hitting a wall at 200 m.p.h. You want to know more, and you know that a sequel would not be possible for this kind of movie. “The Fast and the Furious” was a good overall movie, it has all the action you seek to fulfill your enjoyment, but the movie ends with several questions, unanswered.
