I've always thought of Robert Zemeckis of a great director since he did one of my favourites, "Forrest Gump" and 2 good movies from this new millenium, "What Lies Benneath" and "Cast Away"; but it wasn't until a few minutes ago that I found out he had directed Back to the Future! I know, I should have known being a movie fan, but I don't know much about directors.
Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is a 17 yeard old kid who seems to be the only normal person in his family; his father George has an extremly week personality and he is totally controlled by Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) who is his boss at the moment and always treats him like garbage. His mother is an alcoholic and his brother and sister seem to be useless, the only thing Marty has is his girlfriend Jennifer (Claudia Wells). But Marty's life is sucking at the moment, his music band got rejected at his school and his trip with Jennifer got cancelled because Biff crashed the McFly's car.
Marty gets a call at night from his friend Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd), a local scientist who he calls Doc. Doc wanted him to go to a local mall to show him a major invention, and when Marty arrives there he sees that Doc has modified a Delorean and turned it into a Time Machine. Doc tests the machine with his dog Einstein, and it works perfectly. The car has to hit 88 miles per hour to be able to travel, and it's gasoline is actually plutonium, which generates 1.21 gigawatts of power needed for the time travel. Doc got the plutonium from some Lybian terrorists who wanted him to build a bomb, and these actually show up at the mall in a minivan, they shot Doc, and Marty gets into the Delorean and starts running while the Lybians are trying to shoot the car with a bazooka. Marty hits 88 mph and he goes exactly 30 years to the past.
This is where all the fun begins, Marty goes to visit the young Doc and explains the situation; Doc tells him he must not have contact with his future parents because it could change the future, but it's too late becaus Marty's future mom (Lea Thompson) is already falling in love with him. So Marty has to make his looser dad George get together with the beauty and popular Lorraine, who has many admirers, including Biff.
Nearly the whole film happens in 1955, with Marty trying to gets things right. The film has many laughs and good times, jokes that people of any age would like, but still it's not just another comedy, the story is very nice to watch, specially because it's the first of it's kind. Not that it's the first movie about time travel, but the usage of it in this film is very cool. The performances in this film were great, Fox became some sort of idol after this film because the way he portrayed Marty was just incredible. Christopher Lloyd was also the perfect choice for Doc's character, he looks like the stereotypical mad scientist, with those bug eyes and the crazy white hair; Some people say Lloyd was overacting in the film, but I think that's what the character was supossed to be; Him and Fox made a great couple, both characters were unique. Everyone I know has enjoyed this film, no matter what his age or taste in movies is, I guess this movie just fits into everyone's taste, it's a classic, a must see, if you haven't seen it you still have a chance, hurry up!
[Tyler Cruz, Movie-Vault's president, says this]
<< The driver of the truck that Michael J. Fox holds onto while skateboarding looks back at one point, and if you pause it, you will find out that is Harrison Ford! >>
I personally haven't noticed, but now I want to see the film again to see for myself!
