Edward isn't your normal guy. You see, he wasn't really ever born. He was created by an eccentric inventor (played wonderfully by Vincent Price), who died before completing him. So Edward was left alone to live in a giant house on a mountain, with scissors for hands. He is all by himself, until one day a colorful Avon lady ventures to his house. Being the kind mother she is, she takes Edward home with her, to a place known as Suburbia. There Edward meets the family, including Kim (Winona Ryder), who immediatly takes to Edward.
And so begins Tim Burton's best film to date. Edward Scissorhands is beautiful in every sense of the word. The acting is perfect, the cinematography excellent, and the script superb. Johnny Depp brings a quite, sad depth to a character that could have been played as some sort of Frankenstien monster. Edward does not have many lines, and the lines he does have are short and simple. What makes Edward irresistable is the fact that you can relate to him: although quite, he expresses many different emotions through his eyes and facial expressions, and you that much sadder that he can't ever be accepted in the conformed world of Suburbia.
The music in the movie, composed by Danny Elfman, is brillant: uplifting but depressed. The music helps you be drawn into this fariy tale world, where outcasts become familar before being driven back into obscurity.
The only flaw in this film is the ending. Without giving it away, the end is harshly violent, and seems very out of place in this tender story. While it still helps the story, it destroys the innocence that the movie, and Edward, had.
All in all, a perfect modern fable, with terrific acting, superb dialouge, and masterful direction, Edward Scissorhands is a must see.
Rated PG-13 for violence and language.
