In 1983, the Internet wasn't the Internet. Instead, there were old-school modems and huge-ass computers which were the first 'Personal Computers'.
In WarGames, a young computer whiz (Matthew Boderick), thinking that he's sneaking an advance look at a new line of video games, breaks into the country's NORAD missile-defense system and challenges it to an innocent game of Global ThermoNuclear Warfare. The game might just turn out to be the real thing.
What's great about this movie is that it doesn't use a lot of technical mumbo jumbo, but for computer/Internet enthusiasts like me it uses accurate details. A great example of this is when Boderick unscrews the cap off the payphone, and connects a metallic piece of garbage to it and the base of the phone. This worked on older pay phones back then, and is real phreaking.
There is, inevitably, a love essence in the movie between Boderick and his newly found girlfriend. I guess this was added to give some entertainment to any girls watching the movie. I just feel this wasn't needed as the movie really focuses on man (or in this case boy) vs. machine.
I recommend this movie; it's entertaining and leaves you with what computers used to be like before the WWW came into the picture.
