Review:

You just can’t trust anyone today. In Jennifer Lopez’s new thriller Enough, two of her co-stars had successful roles on popular television shows. Noah Wyle from “ER” and Billy Campbell from “Once and Again” take a turn to the dark side.

J.Lo aka Jennifer Lopez stars as Slim, a waitress in a small town who meets the man of her dreams (or so we think) in Mitch (Campbell). But after a few years of marriage, she sees the real man- a cheating, abusive and all around self-centered asshole. After a especially horrific fight and finding out the police don’t have the power to stop him, she takes her child, Gracie (adorable Tessa Allen) and takes off. With the help from her friends, she manages to skip town to town as Mitch utilizes his source within the police (this is where Noah Wyle comes into play) to track her down (including tracing cell phone calls).

Enough is an intriguing film that has incredible amounts of drama and domestic violence yet still wants to be taken seriously when there are title cards stating things like “Hi”, “When they first met” and things like that (BTW, I know those aren’t the exact phrases but close enough). But the movie does pull away from it and dives right into a great thriller.

J.Lo (although I’ve heard she no longer likes the nickname) does a nice job and gives a convincing dramatic performance. For many movie fans I don’t believe they give her the credit she deserves. To date I can’t name one film where she has not given a poor performance (even Angel Eyes and The Wedding Planner); she consistently takes on roles that require an actor/actress who can take the film on their shoulders.

The supporting cast also give their fair share to the film with Billy Campbell leading the way in a chilling and scary performance that sheds off the nice guy persona he got from “Once and Again”. His sidekick in crime is Noah Wyle while Jennifer gets the talented actress Juliette Lewis and her (Slim’s) ex-boyfriend Joe played by Dan Futterman (from the TV series “Judging Amy”).

Each of the cast members have something to offer to the screenplay by Nicholas Kazan who also wrote Fallen and Matilda. The script does a fine job of mixing drama and thriller genres into one but it gravitates to the clichés found in so many thrillers which is why it doesn’t get many points for originality. But for what it is, he gets the basic work done.

Michael Apted has shown in previous films he knows how to helm a movie of this sort and giving some hair-raising and blood-tingling moments to a script that needed a little more work. Apted has done the same things with mediocre scripts like Extreme Measures and Blink. He has been in the business for more than 30 years and has yet to make that “big” picture that makes him a critic’s household name (and being a Bond director does not count- how many have there been?).

Overall, Enough has an acceptable amount of thrilling scenes coupled with Lopez’s acting and Apted’s direction, makes a good, although unoriginal at times, flick that some might want to wait for rental while others may find it worthwhile at the theater.
