What is the best way to make a quick fortune? Find the wealthiest man in the country and kidnap his son. That is what Ransom is all about. Tom Mullen, (Mel Gibson) is a wealthy airline owner that has a wonderful life until it all crashes down on him when he receives a mysterious phone call from the man who kidnapped his son.
Gary Sinise plays the bad guy, an does one hell of a job at it. Everytime he phones Mullen, he uses a really cool voice distorter, to explain how he wants to be paid off. For most of the movie, Mullen trys to work with the kidnappers to safely get his kid back, but when all else fails, he goes to desperate measures.
One of the high points of this movie, is when he goes on national television holding the ransom money in his hand. Instead of paying off the kidnappers, he offers all the money to the person who finds the kidnappers! That action shocks everybody, and completely spins the movie around. His wife, Kate (Rene Russo) nearly kills him after his speech, leaving Gibson on the floor crying after realizing that he could be responsible if his son dies. That scene was great, and it was one that only Gibson could have pulled off.
The acting in Ransom is superb, far better than most movies. All the characters are believable, and you kind of get attached to all of them. The emotion and struggle that the parents go through adds life to the movie, as you hear yourself silently rooting for Gibson, as he goes on his own manhunt to find his son. The dramatic conversations between Gibson and Sinise have become tag lines. "Give me back my son!" just one of them, in a phone conversation between Mullen and Sinise.
The ending is a twister, and one you won't ever forget. Ransom is one of the best movies for it's type, and full of action throughout. If you want a movie that you can engage yourself in, Ransom is the one.
