The title itself didn't caught my attention very much, as I'm not a Romance fan, but seeing the cast had a few known names, and the director is Antonia Bird (I loved "Ravenous"), I decided to give it a shot.
"Mad Love" is the story of the romance between Matt (Chris O'Donnell), a good student in his last year of high school, and Casey (Drew Barrymore), who is new to both the school and the city. Casey is an unusual girl, or so Matt thinks, since he sees her messing with her Volkswagen's engine. Eventually Matt will approach to her, and the relationship seems to be going just fine.
After a while problems start happening; Casey's parents don't want Matt to see her anymore, and there's a perfectly logical reason for that: Casey has some mental illness, she's not crazy or anything, but depressive, and her folks have let her in the Hospital, where she is tied to a bed, apparently that's what they do to people who try to commit suicide. But Matt is deeply in love with her so he decides to take things on his own...
I would say this is a rather nice love story, and despite this is definitely not my favourite kind of film, it didn't annoy me in any way. This is very different to "Ravenous", which is much darker than this; Antonia Bird knows how to make movies. But, she's still a woman, and so is the screenwriter, so although some might disagree with me here, I consider this to be a chick-flick; Male readers, don't bother. Ladies, you might wanna have a look, I bet you'll find the story quite charming and you'll probably cry at some point, and I'm not being sexist here.
