This may be the third installment of the Jurassic Park series, but it is the first that isn't directed by Steven Spielberg, and boy does it hurt this movie.
Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neil) has been lecturing about his findings and theories about the intelligence of raptors, and has been written two books since we last saw him in the original Jurassic Park. His apprentice, Billy Brennan, (Alessandro Nivola) has been working with him at the digs discovering new facts about ancient dinosaurs. One day, a man by the name of Paul Kirby, (William H. Macy) approaches him and asks he would be a tour guide for him and his wife during a trip where they will be flying over the island where Jurassic Park was created. Grant was hesitant at first, until he was offered a large sum for his research for attending.
If you've seen the trailer, you know what happens next, but you don't know is who Kurby really is, and why he tricked Grant into taking him to the island, where they actually land against Grant's will. The action picks up from there, all though some wouldn't call it much action.
Jurassic Park III is definitely superior to "The Lost World" but falls short of the first one, although that should be expected. Part III was also a lot shorter in duration, I felt like the movie ended in 15 minutes, which is the best thing about this movie, you never ever get bored.
But a decent pace isn't the kind of pace you want with this kind of flick. There are many more dinosaurs in this movie, and many more different species, which added flavor to it. Unfortunately, these dinosaurs are way too friendly!
The raptors are back, and are extremely intelligent as they trap and trick their human prey throughout which made it quite entertaining, although they weren't as fierce as before. There are several times where a raptor spots Grant and crew, and does nothing about it.
The dialogue was well, but the character development was not. This is one of those movies where you will know who will survive and who won't. And even worse, you never see the doomed characters when they do die, not one! All of the deaths in this movie are either, presumed, implied, or the body is seen much afterward. This is a problem, because this movie just isn't scary. There is no suspense, no "jumping out of your seat" moments. What a disappointment. This really could have been a PG movie. Let me say this again, you don't see any flesh ripping like you do in the first, you never see the dinosaur kill anyone. This is where you feel the impact of Spielberg's absence, as we know the kind of works he has made.
The scenery as always, was awesome, and the dinosaurs looked more real than they ever have, too bad Johnston didn't do anything with them.
The ending is the most disappointing factor, as you will wonder, this can't be it! Jurassic Park III definitely had a missing element, and I think it's Spielberg. I still believe you have to see this movie if you followed the first two, I liked the plot in this movie. The way the raptors outsmart the humans at certain parts is brilliant, but this movie didn't deserve the title of "Jurassic Park" instead, it should be called the "Land Before Time, the Live Version."
