Saving Private Ryan is another one of Spielberg's bold and aggressive approaches to telling the story of World War II. Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) has been given the orders to find Private Ryan, (Mat Damon)and bring him home safely to his mother who has already lost three of her sons in combat. His mission sparks a controversy, having to risk the lives of his men, in order to save one, but he eagerly excepts it.
Spielberg doesn't give you any time to get comfortable, the opening scene is one that will keep your eyes open, when the US invades Normandy on Omaha Beach. In every bloody detail, Spielberg makes sure you learn the true horror of war with your own eyes, even though it's through a television screen.
Tom Hanks does a spell binding job, as usually, playing a Captain trying desperately to keep the morale of his company up. Battle scenes occur frequently, and always end up taking the lives of one of the characters, after you get to know them very well. Spielberg sucks you in as if you are a part of Miller's company. The camera shots were nice, capturing the whole picture of World War II.
One thing for sure, Spielberg is not afraid, and for the first time in a world war II movie, you see what Americans do to the enemy even after they put their guns down and surrender.
Spielberg does a good job with the line up of the movie. Even before the opening Omaha scene, you see an emotional group of people watch an old man standing over the grave of a fallen solider, and you don't know who he is until the final minutes of the movie.
Saving Private Ryan tops the war movies, and does the best job portraying true life events in Europe during the war. I wouldn't recommend this movie to people who do not like a lot of blood and gore, because there is plenty of it. Before its release, Saving Private Ryan almost got tagged with a NC-17 rating.
Saving Private Ryan is a touching movie, with strong characters and a well written script. The ending is great, and takes you back to the opening scene with the man standing by the grave. Saving Private is truly one of the best war movies made of all time.
