Nowdays some people still think Tom Hanks is better in his non-drama roles, and they talk about how cool he was in those older comedies. Well, even though I'm one of the people who say he is a truly amazing actor no matter than genre, I also admit that his 80's and early 90's comedies were also cool. I'm not a big fan of romantic comedies, but Joe Vs. the Volcano is a very enjoyable movie.
Joe Banks (Tom Hanks) is a normal guy with a normal job and a normal life overal, something many people would like to have. One day Hanks receives a shocking notice from a doctor, he has what the doc calls a "brain cloud", and he only has six months to live. Joe, shocked, doesn't know what to do, until one day a man goes to his house and makes him a deal: He will give Joe all the money he wants, and he'll live like a king, but before certain date he has to jump into a volcano in an Island, or this will erupt. Joe acepts, he lives his life to the max for some time, then heads to the island, where he'll find a nice tribe that is supossed to treat him very well since he's going to save them from the volcano. Joe goes through this adventure with Patricia (Meg Ryan), and they eventually fall in love.
Through the film you'll find several laughs and funny moments that I really appreciate. This is a comedy, yeah, but it has a great story too, that's what makes it so great, while the good story develops you get to watch it in a funny and comfortable way. This was the first of the Hanks-Ryan movies (Later they'd make "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail"), and I must say it's the best they've made together.
The moments Hanks spends on the island with the tribe are pretty good, none of the jokes is dumb, gross or unappropiate, I'd say this film is suitable for all ages. The acting is pretty good by Hanks and Ryan, and the support cast did a good job also, it includes Lloyd Bridges, Abe Vigoda, Dan Hedaya and a few others. If you want to have a pleasant time than you might wanna give this a try, it's definitely not a bad movie.
