I didn't know what to think of this movie at first, I just said to myself that it must be a dumb film, since it has an incredibly long title, which would sound silly to anyone. The cast didn't help much either, not many of the people here sounded familiar, and the ones who did, well, just aren't my favourites. But it didn't matter at all, this film presents us a beautiful story that I found more than nice to watch.
"The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain" tells the story of the rising of the first mountain in Wales. It's 1917 when two english men, Reginald Anson (Hugh Grant) and the more experienced George Garrad (Ian McNeice) arrive to a small town in Wales; their task is to measure any elevation that would seem to be tall enough to be called a mountain, so it'd be included in the maps. It appears the Welsh community is quite proud of what they are sure is the first mountain around the place, Ffynnon Garw.
The two english men start working, using their instruments and doing a lot of calculations, and after their work is done, it's determined the so called 'mountain' is not tall enough, so it's still just a 'hill'. Everyone in town is quite disappointed, so they decide to add the missing height to the mountain, no matter how hard it is. First, they have to make the english men stay, so they can re-measure once they're done, but it's not going to be easy, they want to leave, since their work is done in that town and they have more measurements to do. Without the 'mountain', this town wouldn't be the same, so everyone is willing to work hard for the noble cause.
A pretty interesting film. It's not too funny, so I wouldn't want to call it a comedy, really; And it's not too romantic either, although Anson gets involved with a young woman (Tara Fitzgerald). What made this film worth watching is, mainly, the story. It wasn't thrilling or exciting, but it was just nice, the kind of story nobody dislikes. It's a true shame most people haven't seen this film.
The acting was great, most of all I liked Colm Meaney as 'Morgan the Goat', the owner of the only local bar, kindof hated by another character I truly enjoyed watching, Reverend Jones (Kenneth Griffith), probably the person who wanted Ffynnon Garw to be considered a mountain the most. Ian McNeice was pretty fun to watch as the very polite Gerrard, and Hugh Grant managed to not use that dumb facial expression he uses in most of his films, much. This is a nice film that most people would enjoy, I'd recommend it to you, no matter what genre is your favorite.. it's nice to try different things once in a while.
