Pearl Harbor is a 148-minute corny soap opera wrapped around an exciting 35-minute action sequence. The actual attack is candy to the eye with the impressive scenes of ships splitting in two and ships rolling over. But then it ends and you are left with another entire hour of superficial characters reciting a love story even embarrassing to the likes of All My Children.
As children Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett) want to be pilots. They fulfill their dream and become some of the best. After Rafe is shot down and presumed dead while flying with the Royal Air Force, Danny is there to comfort and support his lover, Evelyn, who he slowly starts loving himself. Affleck then appears and a test of Rafe's and Danny's relationship starts but is quickly postponed by the events of December 7,1940.
Dialogue is poor with repeating cliches and ideas. Ben Affleck announces his hits like he's participating in some kind of video game, " I got one." The entire love story itself is more predictable then the winner of the battle. But still it takes up more of the film then the battle does which is the whole reason for the film. Making us question the title of the movie. Why even title the movie after a part of it that is only 20% of its 183 minute running time.
Character development relies on a confusing poorly directed opening scene of Rafe and Danny as kids. The acting is drawn into the rest of the movie with only Baldwin's and Beckinsale performances being more then just decent acting. Hartnett can be seen doing a much better job in some of his other films such as his multi-dimensional performance in O. Affleck was adequate but too big headed for us to feel any care for him. Gooding did his job but without a background and with few scenes he wasn't anyone we would feel for either. And Voight is a believable Roosevelt but not an amazing one. The acting was only what was needed. Only a couple exceeding their expectations. Acting spiraled down the same path as the love story.
Pearl Harbor is a mess with a disgusting love story and every other one of its elements falling down also. On top of being lame, historically incorrect and dull they portray the battle as an American triumph, with a feel good ending. A war picture continuing both Bruckheimer's and Hollywood's bad reputation. Burying the whole purpose of the film under an unneeded love story, unexplainable. Please contact Hanks next time before deciding making any more historical war pictures. Had he had his hands on this one we would have been through a riveting sequence of Oscar quality material rather than a poorly written love story with a battle located in it somewhere.
