"The Red Violin", originally with a French title but spoken in english, was one of the best movies of 1998, and it's a mystery to me why it didn't get more recognition. Most known critics liked it, and the people who saw it seemed to like it too, but somehow it was quickly forgotten.
"Le Violin Rouge" follows the story of a violin, from when it's made to it's location in the modern world. It's actually a rather long story, but still very interesting. The violin was made by Nicolo Bussotti, back in the 17th century; At some point of the story it's shown that Bussotti put a lot of effort into this violin, and somehow it ended up being te finest violin ever made, producing beautiful music.
The violin would take quite some journeys. I don't know the order of the different stories, but they are these: A young prodical boy (Christoph Koncz) makes magic with that violin in his hands; An expert violinist (Jason Flemyng) gives the most amazing concerts with it; It's used by orientals in China, and it risks being burned when it was decided they wouldn't teach how to play violin anymore; It is also owned by Gypsys at one point. All of this happens in different times, there is a period of over three hundred years from when it's made to it's current location, and the violin has been in quite a few different countries, with several different owners in each place. The last story takes place in Montreal, when an expert (Samuel L. Jackson) discovers the identity of the violin, and would do anything to get his hands on it. This last story is probably the longest of them all, and for me it was the most interesting.
This film not only had great acting, but it was beautifully written, and that's probably why most people who saw it, liked it. It's not just a dumb story around a violin, it's not one of those stories that focus only in the main thing -in this case would be the violin- and then the rest is pure garbage, not at all. As a matter of fact, it's the opposite. It's not about the violin -Well, it is, but not entirely-, the film introduces several characters in each of it's stages, and it shows much of some of them in a few cases. It showed how the violin would change their lives when they first got it, and how it would affect their lives when/if they had to let it go.
"The Red Violin" is an awesome movie, and that's why I'm giving it a perfect score, although it might not be perfect, because it deserves it anyways. If you're looking for a film with good acting, and a wonderful story, then this is a must-see for you. In fact, it's a must see for everyone, this is one of those films that many people will never watch, but it shouldn't be missed by anyone. I'll say no more, go watch it for yourself.
