It's a shame that the world is completely blind. I still don't know for sure why everyone was (still is) considering a film titled "Cruoching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to be such a masterpiece, they even thought it deserved 50 Oscars (are there that many categories?). I thought this film should have won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language picture, it was much better than "CT,HD". It was also pretty fun for me to watch because my main language is spanish, and since the film is Mexican I could understand everything they said. Not that I don't understand english (because I do.. most of it) but it's just unusual for me to watch a film that's not in english, it was actually pretty cool. Anyways, on to the review.
The film starts with a car crash which is the event that would later show the audience how it connected 3 sepparate stories. It presents different characters and what was going on with their lives before the crash happened, and then it shows how it affected their lives.
Octavio (Gael García Bernal) lives in a poor neighborhood and is in love with his sister in law Susana (Vanessa Bauche), who lives in the same house, along with her abusive husband Ramiro (Marco Pérez). Ramiro doesn't get along with Octavio at all, his life isn't admirable either, he works at a supermarket, but also steals small stores from time to time to make some extra cash. Octavio's plan is to run away with his brother's wife Susana, but he needs some money first, so he uses his dog to earn some money after he discovers how good it is for dog-fighting. Daniel (Álvaro Guerrero) is a man who divorces his wife and leaves his children to be able to live with Valeria (Goya Toledo), a betufiul young model. "El Chivo" (means "the goat", Emilio Echevarría) is an old man, ex-guerilla who gets paid from a cop to make some dirty jobs such as killing people; it's easy for him to do that because nobody knows him, he has no friends except the 7 (approx.) dogs that live with him. Every character starts having problems and it all gets worse after the crash, it's rather interesting watching what happens to the main characters after they're now in a bad, depressing situation.
Many have compared this film with "Pulp Fiction" because of the chronological disorder and the way it puts several stories together, but it'd be very unfair to say this film is an attemp to duplicate Pulp; Just by watching it you'd notice the atmosphere is totally different and so are the stories, the non-linear narrating is just a resource to make it more interesting to watch. For me and probably most other people this is the first time we saw the faces of these actors, and I was surprised when I saw all these high quality performances. I think the actors and the director both are very promising, it was a shame the film didn't get more recognition because even though it's not a masterpiece it's extremly good. Mexicans must be very proud of this, it's definitely my favourite Foreign Language film... well I haven't seen many so that wouldn't mean much, so I'm gonna have to say it's better than a huge ammount of films I saw in the same year. I'd recommend this film anytime, it's a shame that some people skip it because it's not in english, please try to watch it, you'll thank me later.
