A multi-layered family tale that is told through many generations, each segment cleverly edited together. A truly original film, which for my money, is the best film director Ron Howard has made so far.
There's the all American family in Steve Martin and Mary Steenburgen, there's the divorcee and her kids in Dianne Wiest, Martha Plimpton, and Leaf (later changed to Joaquin) Phoenix, and Keanu Reeves.
There's the 'genius' American family in Rick Moranis, there's the con artist-type son in Tom Hulce and there are the parents of all these grown ups in Jason Robards and Eileen Ryan (Sean Penn's reallife mother).
What we're left with is a clever, funny take on American families that's sure to put a smile on your face each time you watch it. Robards is excellant, and so is Hulce, with Steve Martin giving the film its balance.
This is a perfect ensemble film if i've ever seen one, and I could see of its influence on Paul Thomas Anderson's 1999 film "Magnolia", with its plot about family and forgiveness. Though this is much much comedic than that piece, and a bit more light, the similarities are there.
