Kalifornia is an intelligent horror flick. It bypasses most gore and instead focuses on a story and the horrors of serial killing. Even exploring questions as what’s their motive and what people close to the killers (if they do have any) go through?
Brian Kessler (David Duchovny) starts traveling the country visiting different serial killer scenes for his book he’s writing on serial killers. But he doesn’t realize there’s one in his backseat. Not until the body count rises.
Kalifornia has an education. It is a much better done film of the horror genre than some of its siblings. It has a well-planned and executed plot and shows you the darker side of Brad Pitt (serial killer Early). Juliette Lewis should not be forgotten either. A convincing role as Early's girlfriend (Adele) who turns a blind eye toward Early's serious problems and will only acknowledge the positive. Duchovny and Forbes offer challenging performances making this a film overflowing with talent. Including the directing style. Which offer an atmosphere of the serial killer scenes so terrifying it threatens to drive the sane insane.
The major fault of this film is coincidence. A serial killer joining a guy writing a book on serial killers, how likely is this to happen? This isn't very realistic. It downgrades the film to possibly just another blank faced slasher movie offering nothing more then some non-glamorous gore scenes. But bypassing the coincidence that if absent would present us without a film we see this is truly educated and deserving of a showing.
