This was the film that made Jim Carrey as popular as a person can possibly get. He had already done other good comedies (Dumb & Dumber) but with this one he got to the top. I'm tired of watching how Carrey gets criticised by some people who say he's not funny and he's where he is just because of his rubber-face, that's pure crap. Lets face it, Carrey is a brilliant comedian, possibly one of the best there ever was, he's a naturally funny guy, he doesn't need to be making funny facial expressions to make people laugh, it's just his entire presence that's funny, and that's a gift not many people have.
Ace Ventura (Carrey) is a pet detective. That means, if someone looses a pigeon or a dog, they call Ace and he uses his incredible skills to find it for them. Pretty unusual, huh? Ace has a gift to 'communicate' (or just gets along well) with animals. His house is full of all kinds of animals, even penguins; he loves animals, he wouldn't like to see one get hurt and always does the craziest thing to rescue one of them.
Ace gets a call for a job. He will work on the case of the kidnapped Miami Dolphin's mascot, a dolphin trained to do tricks with a football. While Ace works on the case he meets Melissa Robinson (Courtney Cox), and they start a relationship. Through all the investigation Ace goes through a lot of stuff, he uses the weirdest methods and does the craziest things to get clues, that includes pretending to be a crazy ex-football player so he can join a mental hospital to look for some stuff. The scenes at the hospitals are incredibly funny.
Ace might be a bit crazy, but he's still pretty smart. He found some things in a murder scene that the Lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young) and other policemen didn't notice, and he's getting closer to finding those responsible of the disappearance of the dolphin. Lois doesn't like Ace very much so she tells him to stay away from the case, but Ace wont stop. He will do anything to succeed on his case. Of course through the film we could ask ourselves: "Why would you steal a dolphin?", that's something Ace will find out.
As I mentioned before, Carrey is a funny guy even when he's not trying to be funny. The way he walks, talks and generally act are worth a laugh, a truly great comedian. Several laughs guaranteed, nobody should miss this film. Other movie fans (more serious ones) might find it just a normal (or dumb) comedy, but other people who like or at least enjoy comedies think this is a pretty funny film. Be sure to check if you have a sense of humor, if the answer is yes then you don't wan't to miss this film.
